The Witherspoon People’s Verse Speaking Choir was founded at Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church in 1986. The choir performs on the third Sunday of each month at the 10 a.m. worship service. The readings include religious, secular, and contemporary selections.
The choir’s original mission was to study and sustain African and African-American literature. This mission has expanded to include world literature in Chamber Theater, Readers Theater, and choral speaking styles.
The founder-director is Cecelia B. Hodges, Ph.D. She has taught at Talladega College in Alabama, as a tenured associate professor of speech and dramatic art at Douglass College of Rutgers University and as an English professor at Princeton University. The Mayhem Poets have toured internationally, collaborating with hip hop legend KRS One and with musicians Greg Patillo and Jane Hunt.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Witherspoon Street Presbyterian Church Organ Fund. For more information contact the church office at (609) 924-1666 or [email protected]. To purchase tickets call (609) 468-7270 or [email protected].
