HIGHTSTOWN East Windsor Deputy Mayor Walter T. Daniels Jr.’s first Municipal Court appearance relating to his March 1 arrest in Hights- town was postponed until 1:30 p.m. April 6, according to borough court records.
Mr. Daniels was originally scheduled to make a first appearance March 16 to respond to charges of driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated within a school zone, refusal to submit breath samples, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to maintain lane and failure to keep right.
A clerk for Mr. Daniels’ attorney, Mark S. Shane of Shane and White, of Edison, referred questions to attorney Ken White, who said Mr. Shane was out of the office for the week and would be unreachable for comment.
According to police, an officer on patrol spotted Mr. Daniels at about 7:45 p.m. March 1 driving 37 mph in a 25 mph zone before stopping him on Davidson Road. Police said Mr. Daniels failed a field sobriety test and refused to offer a breath sample to check his blood alcohol content.
East Windsor Mayor Janice Mironov told the Herald previously that Mr. Daniels would not exercise his powers as a deputy mayor, which include assuming mayoral functions if the mayor was to be absent or disabled. Mr. Daniels still has a vote and engages in Township Council discussions, as was the case at its March 8 meeting.
