Girls on the Run is a potentially life-changing, experiential learning program for girls in grades 3-5. The 10-week season innovatively weaves training for a 5K running event with lessons that empower girls to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices and embrace their gifts.
The goal is to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. For more information and to register, log on to www.girlsontherunnj.org. -It is a non-profit organization founded by Molly Barker in 1996 in Charlotte, NC.
-Girls on the Run International is the parent organization to more than 150 councils across North America, serving over 40,000 girls annually.
-The 20-lesson curricula empowers girls with a greater sense of self-awareness, achievement and a foundation in team building as well as a commitment to enhancing their communities, all of which helps them become, strong contented and self-confident women.
-Through interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, participants in the 12-week after school program learn how to celebrate their unique and real selves.
-Each session is led by trained female coaches that guide and mentor girls through the fun and uplifting curriculum.
-The program concludes with all participants walking or running in a 5k (3.1 mile) event.
-Lessons include topics to enable girls to grow strong during adolescence. Topics include dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer-pressure, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community.
