Herbert Klein III has been named president and chief executive officer of United Way of Greater Mercer County succeeding Craig Lafferty, who served as president since1994 and retired late last year.
Mr. Klein has executive management experience in both for profit and nonprofit. He brings an understanding of emerging technologies and their commercial applications, having spent several years at PricewaterhouseCoopers and Accenture.
In discussing his plans, Mr. Klein said, "While I fully expect them to evolve over the next several months, I can outline today four points upon which we will focus: Strengthening our core capabilities, programs, and our ability to deliver on our mission; engaging our community in meaningful ways, focusing on programs and volunteer efforts that deliver lasting change; improving upon and securing our financial future; and operating United Way of Greater Mercer County as a professional organization according to accepted business standards."
Brian Rath, board chairman, said, "We are very excited to have Mr. Klein join United Way of Greater Mercer County. His background, experience and new goals are going to help move the organization forward and build a stronger community."
Peter Crowley, president and CEO of Princeton Regional Chamber of Commerce, said, "I look forward to working with Herb Klein and United Way of Greater Mercer County as they bring new partnership opportunities to our community."
Mr. Klein said "The key to United Way’s approach is creating environments where sustained change can occur over time. In the end, we are measured by the lives we change, not by the numbers that indicate activity yet fail to impact the future. Given the current financial climate, it is no surprise that there will be fewer public dollars available to support future community impact efforts. The reality is that the needs not only remain, but they are increasing for many members of our community, many of whom would never have thought they would ever need assistance."
