Littlebrook hosts first ever Girls Night Out

By Jennifer Walters
Littlebrook Elementary School will host its first ever Girls Night Out: A Celebration of Girlhood on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 from 6:00-8:00pm in the all purpose room.  Girls Night Out is open to all Littlebrook girls in grades three, four, and five as well as their mothers (or significant female adults, i.e. grandmothers, aunts, or big sisters).  During this special evening, we will discuss strategies to assist girls in developing assertiveness, positive self image, and confidence.  Parents will receive information on anti-bullying initiatives, as well as tips on how to effectively communicate with their daughters as the girls enter the pre-teen years.
From 6:10-6:30, participants will hear from Jennifer Walters, Littlebrook’s school counselor, about the "Girl World" program at Littlebrook.  "Girl World" is a two-month intensive group program open to girls in grades 3-5.  The "Girl World" groups met for two months in January and February and focused on changing friendships, coping with peer pressure, and self-esteem.  In addition, Amy Wargo and Kelly Riely, teachers at John Witherspoon Middle School will be sharing information with parents and students about the girls’ group at the middle school.
The majority of our evening will be spent watching the American Girl movie Chrissa Stands Strong, which deals with girl bullying, teasing, cliques, and peer pressure.  Parents and girls will be provided with extension activities to do at home after the movie.
