In response to the disaster in Japan, students at Princeton High School are holding fund-raising events.
Japanese teacher Natsuko Buurstra said that during the second week of April the following clubs will hold bake sales after school: on Monday, the Japanese and Chinese Club; on Tuesday, the Dance Club; on Wednesday, the Debate Club; and on Friday, the Asian American Club.
Secondly, the Japanese club made some paper bags to collect batteries and money for homerooms, said Ms. Buurstra.
Additionally, during the Asian Festival, which will be held from 7 to 9 Friday evening, March 25, in the gymnasium, Princeton High School students and Princeton University Japanese students association will collect money. Displays will be up the regarding the disaster.
Ms. Buustra’s entire family lives in Yokohama, south of Tokyo. Her brother was outside when the quake hit and had to hold a tree to keep from falling. They never experienced that strong of a shake in their lives, she said.
Her family was fortunate as no loved ones perished or suffered injury. The area where they live had a power outage, which caused a large traffic jam and the trains were not running.
This left many to make the journey home by foot.
Out of the destruction and chaos she said her brother witnessed a kindness that impressed him. He told Ms. Buurstra that people were very kind to each other, that they would help one another try to find the right way home as they walked.
