WEST WINDSOR – Hannah Jin, a senior at West Windsor-Plainsboro South High School, won the grand prize for her project, The Effect of Static Magnetic Fields on the Biomineralization of Osteoblasts, at the 58th Mercer Science and Engineering Fair at Rider University in Lawrenceville.
Nearly 420 students from 36 Mercer County schools in grades 4 to 12 registered for the fair, hosted by Rider for the 28th consecutive year.
As the grand prize winner, Ms. Jin earned an all-expense-paid trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles from May 8 to 13.
If she is unable to attend, Rebecca Wolf of Steinert High School in Hamilton, who claimed first runner-up honors for her project, Cellulose Versus Keratin: Are Natural Fibers an Option for Absorbing Oil During Spills? will attend in her place.
Vijay Narayan, also of West Windsor-Plainsboro South, earned second runner-up mention for his project, Imagine and Mechanical Characterization of Nickel Nonowires.
Alexander Road work
WEST WINDSOR – Construction and paving on the Alexander Road "S-curve" is under way between Canal Pointe Boulevard and Canal Road. Work hours will take place daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with partial lane closures occurring from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The work may take up to 10 weeks, weather permitting. Drivers will likely experience short delays.
The project involves widening the road to 38 feet, with one lane of travel and a five-foot bike path in each direction. Features will include elevation of the roadway to create a banking effect, improving roadway striping and signs, and using high-friction pavement.
Mid-project there will be a two-week full closure, from Glenview Drive to Canal Road, with a detour to perform deep utility work and repairs. During this time traffic will be detoured using Route 1 to Washington Road to Faculty Road. Existing businesses, including Obal Garden Market, will remain accessible during the project.
