SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Viking girls take county championship game

The Viking 8th grade girl’s team won the Middlesex County championship this week with a 39-11 win over IC-Spotswood.
   The Vikings got out early behind Erica Dwyer’s eight first quarter points. Janae Mayfield and Erin Carroll each scored on a 3-point play in the second quarter to give the Vikings a commanding halftime lead.
   The third quarter ended with a Zoee D’Costa 3-point shot and Briana Davis’s basket to extend the Vikings lead. Rachel Calabro and Zojajha Ayub each hit jumpers in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
   Leading the way in scoring were, Ms. Dwyer, 15, Ms. D’Costa, 7, Ms. Carroll, Ms. Ayub and Ms. Calabro, 4, Ms. Mayfield, 3 and Ms. Davis, 2.
   The Vikings finished runner-up in league play losing to Westfield 49-39. Ms. Calabro and Ms. Mayfield combined for seven first half points to keep the Vikings close. Dwyer hit a 3-point shot off Ms. D’Costa’s assist just before the half to close the lead at the break.
   The Vikings came back behind Ms. Carroll and Ms. Ayub’s combined 10 points. With Westfield up by eight points, Ms. Davis scored on a 3-point play and Sunna Baig scored on a putback to close the gap to within four. Westfield, however, hit their foul shots down the stretch to pull out the win.
   Leading the scoring during the game were, Ms. Carroll, 10, Ms. Davis, 8, Ms. Ayub, 6, Ms. Dwyer, 5, Ms. Mayfield, Ms. Calabro, 4 and Ms. Baig, 2.
