International sax-master and Rutgers’ Professor ,BOWEN, is NBJP Musical Advisor and this week he has invited the amazing Tanya Darby to join him. Tanya, who by the age of 12 was already expressing the elements of a mature jazz player, soon became a regular at the Monterey Jazz Festival, playing with the festival’s elite. She has performed with such artists as Jon Faddis, Clark Terry, Frank Foster, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Diane Reeves, Ramsey Lewis, Slide Hampton. A member of the DIVA Orchestra, since 1997, Tanya has also played with Nancy Wilson, Joe Williams, Diane Schurr and Dave Brubeck at venues such as the Blue Note, Montreal Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center, the Verizon Jazz Festival at Lincoln Center, the Lionel Hampton Jazz Room in Paris, Teatro de Sistina in Rome and Carnegie Hall. We are thrilled and honored to welcome Tanya Darby! With Ralph and Tanya will be JARED GOLD who is a genius as he commands the mighty Hammond B3 organ and on drums, the talented, exuberant RUDY ROYSTON. This will be a BIG NIGHT for sure!
THURSDAY March 31 we welcome trombonist EMILY ASHER, and her quartet. Emily Asher is a trombonist and music educator in New York City who performs regularly with The Baby Soda Jazz Band, Mikey Hart and the Lucky Dogs, The Grand St. Stompers and The Mighty Aphrodite Jazz Band. She has also had the honor of performing with Nicholas Payton, Talib Kweli, Allen Vizzutti among others. Emily will bring us the hot distinctive sound of New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, to the stage at Makeda for the first time! The distinctive rhythm of New Orleans Jazz has a swinging, stomping, syncopated beat that’ll make you want to move.
