HILLSBOROUGH: Survivor Sundae contest nears end

Store gives $1 for each ice cream treat designed by kids

With their sweet teeth this weekend, Hillsborough High sophomores voted the freshmen off the ice cream Survivor Sundae island.
With today as the deadline, the question has dwindled to whether the junior class Jolt Sundae will be able to overtake the senior class entry. The juniors’ treat features M&Ms and chocolate chip cookie ice creams with cookie dough bites. The seniors’ strategically chosen traditional sundae treat is made of vanilla and chocolate ice creams with crushed Oreos and hot fudge.
At stake is a few more dollars for the winning class treasury, compliments of the Super Sundaes shop at 435 Amwell Road. So far, owner Jayne Mochnacz’s commitment has risen to a total of $560.
All four high school classes are benefiting from the store’s “Survivor Sundae Game.” The students will receive $1 for each purchase of their described sundae through Sunday, said owner Jayne Mochnacz.
The close of the battle for top sundae will close today, however. The class treat most purchased will bring the winning class another $100, with the second placer $75.
The sundaes are one size and cost $5. All have two portions of ice cream and three toppings and all are topped with whipped cream and a cherry.
As of Tuesday, the senior class Super Seniors Sundae has been bought the most (247), Ms. Mochnacz said.
The Juniors Jolt Sundae came on with a rush this weekend to edge past the sophomores Sa-Party Sundae, which consists of vanilla and chocolate chip ice creams with crushed Oreos, chopped thin mint Girl Scout cookies, green sprinkles and hot fudge.
The juniors worked their inside advantage, with class member Christina Halm suggesting it to customers as she worked behind the counter. Whatever the reason, the juniors pushed ahead with 122 total buys, versus the sophs’ 120.
The freshmen class will still gain $1 for each Dare Devil Sundae of chocolate and cookie dough ice creams with crushed Oreos, brownie chunks and hot fudge. It has been bought 81 times, said Ms. Mochnacz.
With a little insight from Ms. Mochnacz’s son, Kyle, a senior class member who works at the store, the seniors chose to use the most popular ice creams and topping, Ms. Mochnacz said.
Class treasuries usually help pay for such events as prom and picnics, but the April 29 Spirit Night is also a focus of fund raising. That’s when the four classes compete in games and events like a graded dance competition.
Super Sundaes is located next to the post office. Store hours are Tuesday–Sunday, 1 to 9 p.m.
