Week of March 31
During the public session of the Borough Council meeting on March 28, resident Frank Jurewicz spoke and asked about if the Rustic Mall property was off the Super Fund List yet.
Mayor Lillian Zuza answered Mr. Jurewicz by explaining that a letter was sent but Manville has not received the response yet.
Mr. Jurewicz also asked about having more police presence on Main Street. Police Chief Mark Peltack answered by saying that Manville has had foot patrols for years. Mr. Jurewicz said he would like to see more patrolling.
Rudy Nowak questioned how much the budget was going to increase. Borough Administrator Gary Garwacke said that the municipal budget was going to increase the tax rate to the homeowner 2½ cents or $75 for an average $200,000 home. The increase is due to rising costs.
A concerned citizen asked if Manville had a curfew in town and Chief Peltack responded that 10 p.m. is the cufew time. The resodemt said that there were concerns “about the kids walking on the streets and doing damage to cars, breaking windows and this has got to stop.” The resident said that people can’t sleep at night with the cars coming down the street at one, two o’clock in the morning. “Why are these kids walking around on the streets at certain times?”
Chief Peltack said he will look into it.
Under committee reports, Councilman Richard Onderko said that the grass clippings drop off will resume beginning this Saturday at the Department of Public Works. He also announced that the annual Clean Community Day will be held on Saturday, April 30.
Councilamn Lou Fischer reported that the Recreation Department Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for this Saturday at 11 a.m. at Lincoln Park and that there will be a community softball tournament on May 14 sponsored by the Manville Municipal Alliance and Manville Recreation. He also stated that the Manville Recreation has partnered with the Somerset county Office of Aging so that the light weights program will now be combined with the Senior Citizen Nutrition center.
Councilwoman Sue Asher announced that the street fair is being planned for Sept. 11 along with the Manville Business and Professional Association. Ms. Asher is working with Mary Tabbit and applications will be sent out next week. There are two farmers who are very interested in the farmers market which will is scheduled to begin the end of May, she said.
