MANVILLE: Chess enthusiasts await Saturday challenges

By Mary Ellen Zangara, Special Writer
Chess may be a very intense concentrating activity but some play chess for the pure enjoyment. A group of chess players meet every Saturday at the Manville Public library to play the game.
On Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. players meet in the new quiet room at the library. Both novice and beginners are welcome and to invited to come and learn how to play or challenge those who are skilled. Learn the terms, positions and how to play the game.
Resident volunteer Joe Kavalesky spends his Saturdays playing against others. Mr. Kavalesky has been involved in the chess club for about seven or eight years.
”Right now there are not too chess players as they drop in occasionally.,” he said. “Sometimes we have a little bit more for a while, then they stop coming,”
According to Mr. Kavalesky, there were a lot of players coming but in the last few weeks, the attendees have dwindled. He would like to see more people attend.
If someone would like to learn how to play chess, there is a volunteer who also comes to teach them how to play. In the past, there have been a few and even a mother and daughter came to learn.
Mr. Kavalesky likes to play as he has been playing chess almost all his life. “It is relaxing; it gets your brain cells simulated. I like to play whoever wants to play me,” he said.
For more information about the chess club call the Manville Public Library at (908) 722-9722 or just come to the library on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m.
