For those of us who live along the Delaware River, we can say that it plays a vital role in our lives.
Besides its natural beauty and the recreation we enjoy, it also supplies water to over 15 million people in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
Now there is a new threat called “fracking,” a process that injects billions of gallons of water into deep wells in Marcellus Shale to release natural gas fuel. The chemicals in the “fracking” liquids will end up in the Delaware River and in the end in our tap water.
The Delaware River Basin Committee in Trenton has extended the period for the public to comment on this only until April 15. This does not allow the EPA time to complete its studies on the potential hazards this will cause.
We still have time to contact them and ask for a two-year moratorium on “fracking,” so we can keep the beauty we have without it becoming another toxic dumping ground like Love Canal.
