Playhouse 22
EAST BRUNSWICK: Playhouse 22, East Brunswick’s Community Theater, proudly presents William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice opening on April 8, 2011 and running through May 8. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m., and Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. There are no shows the weekend of April 24. Guests are invited to attend an exclusive talk-back session with the show’s cast and crew after the show on Sunday, April 10.
Directed by Andrew Parks, The Merchant of Venice is one of the Shakespeare’s best-known and often-performed plays. The story involves a Shylock, a greedy money-lender, who’s lost his beloved daughter when she elopes with a man who belongs to a virulently anti-Semitic society. Shylock seeks a literal “pound of flesh” from the Merchant of Venice – Antonio when he fails to pay the debt. Portia, defends Antonio from Shylock’s legal suit. Shylock ends by renouncing his faith and his fortune.
Parks explains, “The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare’s more challenging, thought-provoking pieces. While many may find it to be a comedy, there are certainly many dramatic parts of this work.”
