BOUND BROOK – The next meeting of The Red-Headed League of Jersey, a society of Sherlock Holmes aficionados, will be held Friday, April 29, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Madeline’s at 518 Vosseller Ave. Potential new members and guests are welcome.
The evening’s program will feature a talk on stamps devoted to Sherlock Holmes and the author who created him. Two-thousand-nine was the 150th anniversary of the birth of Arthur Conan Doyle. A number of countries issued postage stamps to honor Sir Arthur and Sherlock Holmes. Bob Moss of Metuchen, a member of the Baker Street Irregulars as well as the Red-Headed League of Jersey, will review the lives of both Doyle and Holmes as depicted on postage stamps. His presentation will be illustrated with PowerPoint slides and several rare books.
Following the presentation, a challenging quiz crafted by Peter Jacoby of Bedminster will be given on “The Adventure of the Copper Beeches.”
The evening will begin with a cash bar at 6:30 p.m. followed by a buffet dinner featuring a garden salad, carved London broil, chicken piccata, penne in vodka sauce, roasted herb potatoes, vegetable medley, coffee and tea, and Viennese pastries.
Cost is $30 per person and includes dinner, tax and gratuity. Payment is due in advance by April 22. Checks should be made payable to Linda Morris and mailed to her at 723 Drake Avenue, Middlesex, NJ 08846. The Red-Headed League of Jersey, which meets twice a year, is one of many scion societies of the Baker Street Irregulars (BSI), the leading American Sherlockian society. Members share a common interest in the consulting detective created in the 1880s by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Like many of the societies affiliated with the BSI, the organization takes its name from one of the 56 short stories and four novels penned by Conan Doyle. Red hair is not required for membership or attendance at any of the dinners.
