HILLSBOROUGH: Seniors’ calendar for week of April 7

CHAPTER A
Chapter A meets the first Thursday of the month in the municipal complex. We are open to new members. Doors open at 11:30, allowing you time to review the activities we offer. The meeting begins at 12:30 p.m. Dick Meier is president; you can call him at 908-359-6948 if you have a question.
On April 7, our regular meeting will be a health fair. There will be many professionals on hand for you to consult if you have a concern. Chapter B will join us from 10 a.m. to noon. Need to get your pressure checked, or do you have a question about your medication, or other things, like blood sugar or some ache or pain? There will be someone you can talk to. This is free to seniors, so please take advantage of this service.
Our regular meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. and end with refreshments.
Please be aware that your yearly dues of $5 must be paid at this meeting or you will be dropped from our rolls and you’ll not be eligible to join us at trips and luncheons.
On April 13, we’ll have our member appreciation luncheon. Cost is $12, which will be refunded on your arrival. We have a nice meal, which is followed by bingo with cash prizes. We always have a good time.
   Upcoming trips:
   • April 28 — “A Chorus Line” at N.J. PAC in Newark. We’ve been there before and know this is a large theater. Lunch will be at Essex House in West Orange. We’ll ride in the large bus in comfort. Cost is $87. Depart 10 a.m. from Pathmark lot.
May 9-13 — Niagara Falls and Toronto. This is still open and your last chance to sign up, if you are interested. Cost is $459 for a double and $609 for a single. Depart from the municipal building.
June 9 — “Blithe Spirit” at Hunterdon Hills Playhouse. Lunch and the comedy show for $55. You can pay for this at the next meeting.

On July 10 we’ll have our anniversary party at Polish Falcons.
Get ready for spring cleanup on May 2. Tickets will be available at the April meeting. How easy can it get, short of someone doing it for you?
Play cards on Tuesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. On Friday, the mah jongg gang is concentrating on their game. They will be happy to get new members and they’ll show you how.
We go to Atlantic City on the first Monday of the month, departing from the Pathmark lot at 9 a.m. Call Jo for details at 908-359-6418. Open to everyone. This is a direct destination, with no other pickups.

CHAPTER B
Although some days, weather wise, have not been cooperative, we are about to celebrate Spring with a luncheon on April 14 at the Municipal Building.
This will be in lieu of our regular meeting. A cold buffet will be served by a local caterer. Cost of ticket is $15 and monies will be refunded upon attendance. No tickets will be sold at door. Doors are opening at 11 a.m. to give everyone time to visit our ticket tables. Please bring your checkbook or some checks so that you don’t miss out on some of our upcoming events.
As you are reading this column, a bus filled with Chapter B members and friends are enjoying a two-day visit to Mystic, Conn. Included in this trip is a visit to the Foxwood Casino for lunch and a show headlining Yakof Smirnoff, the famous Russian comedian.
Our Anniversary Luncheon committee is busy working on our annual luncheon, which is to be held on June 9 at the Somerville Elks Club on Route 28. They have selected country western as our theme. Cost for luncheon will be $30 and upon attendance you will receive a refund of $20. Tickets will be sold in April and May. Again, we do not sell tickets at the door.
Tickets for our trip on June 21 to the Garden for Sculpture in Hamilton with lunch to follow at the famous Mastoris Restaurant in Bordentown will be on sale at the April meeting.
We celebrated the second anniversary of the opening of thesenior activity rooms last October. Many groups come in and take advantage of these wonderful facilities. All three rooms are for the use of any senior citizen over age 60 and a resident of Hillsborough.
There is a large room with tables and chairs, CD player, kitchenette and some groups already have set days that they meet. On Tuesdays, beginning at 9:30 a.m., a group of players meet to play bridge. They welcome new players so stop by some Tuesday morning. Group leader is Fred.
On Friday mornings beginning at 9 a.m. we have anywhere from 10 to 12 eager players starting their morning with a cup of coffee and mah jong play beginning at 9:30. New players are welcome and we have several sharp ladies ready and able to teach.
Almost two years ago I stopped by to visit this group and intended to stay for 30 minutes. I loved the game and the people and still participate each week.
Other groups meet for fun games at different times. We have a pool table and shuffleboard table in another room and also a small library and computers in the third room. Our new co-presidents, Ed and Nancy Bertin, hope to expand the use of these rooms. If you have any ideas, please feel free to let us know.
