Jenn Haley has lived in the township for five years. She is married to Dennis, who has a son who is a freshman at Hillsborough High School.

She volunteered as an assistant coach for the fourth, fifth and sixth grade Hillsborough Recreation girls’ basketball program this year; the team won its championship game. The former basketball, softball and tennis player says she wants to join the Board of Education to ensure that children are provided with a well-rounded, high-quality educational experience. Marissa Sladek: Special ed vote
Marissa Sladek moved to Hillsborough in June of 2003. She and her husband have four children, including three who attend Woods Road Elementary School. Her five-year-old twins are in a four-year-old preschool inclusion classroom, and her three-year-old son splits his day between preschool disabilities and an autism classroom.
Ms. Sladek received a degree in special education from Lock Haven University in 2000 and a master’s degree in reading education in December from East Stroudsburg University. She said she would like to move toward a Doctorate in Literacy specializing in special needs children and their reading development.
She said she wants more special needs parents to have their voices heard on the Board of Education. She said in an e-mail that those making decisions regarding money haven’t stepped in a classroom in many years, if at all; that being the case, she questioned how they could make competent decisions about where money should go.
”The Director of Special Education has made some changes to extended school year that many parents disagree with,” she wrote. “We have voiced our opinions and it seems as if it falls on deaf ears. If there was another parent of special needs children on the school board to voice an opinion, I believe our children’s education will not be as impacted.”
”I think that we need to look at where we spend our money a bit more closely, however. I think we need to spend wisely; our money should go towards our children’s education and not administration,” she said.
Judy Hass: Two-term incumbent
Judy Haas, seeking a third term on the Board of Education, and her husband Lloyd have lived in the township for 22 years.
She spent 18 years as a high-level administrator and public advisor in New York City government and three years as Hillsborough’s Township Administrator after earning a BA in political science and communications from Queens College and a master’s degree in public administration from St. John’s University.
Ms. Haas has a son, Lenny, and two stepsons, Marc and David.
She has served as the board’s vice president for two years and is a certificated board member. She has also chaired the Communications Committee and served on the curriculum, finance, personnel, policy and facilities committees.
During three years as a full-time mom, Ms. Haas said she volunteered as a class parent, PTA/HSA member, advisory committee member, life skills presenter, reading volunteer and coach of baseball, basketball and soccer. She also co-chaired Project Graduation and is currently the treasurer of the Hillsborough Public Library Advisory Board.
Ms. Haas said in an e-mail that she believes board members need to continue to update their knowledge about what kids need to learn and how they can learn best.
She said there is a need to advance all children’s exposure to science, technology, international cultures and languages, and creative, interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving, collaboration and innovation.
