MANVILLE: Dancer to compete in world event

Even David Janovsky finds it amazing.
”Who would have thought that a young man named David Janovsky from Manville, New Jersey, would get the opportunity to compete in the top Irish dance competition at the world championships in Dublin?” he asked rhetorically.
Now he’s getting some help with his expenses. The Irish Business Association, based in Clark, has donated $500 to the college student to offset some of the cost of competing in the World Championship of Dance in Ireland from April 17-23.
Mr. Janovsky recently placed fifth in the men’s under-18 category of the Mid-Atlantic Regional of the competition, also called Oireachtas Rince Irish Dance, in Philadelphia to qualify for the world championship.
The New Jersey-based IBA comprises business owners and professionals of Irish descent from throughout north-central New Jersey and combines business interests with cultural pursuits, according to Al Nunan, the association’s president.
”The Irish Business Association is committed to promoting the business interests of our members,” Mr. Nunan said. “However, there is no separating business from pleasure with the Irish. We are founded on our shared Irish heritage and Irish dancing is very much embedded in our culture. Supporting David was a perfect opportunity for us to put the collective resources of our members behind a fine cultural cause that links the land of our forefathers with our home, New Jersey.”
Mr. Janovsky is a graduate of Manville High School and a freshman at the University of New Haven. Son of an Irish mother, he became interested in Irish dancing just eight years ago and has performed for local school groups, at St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and for charity functions. Qualifying for the world competition has been a life-long dream, he said.
The $500 donation will help Mr. Janovsky cover the cost of transportation, accommodations, meals and registration.
The Irish Business Association meets the third Tuesday of each month at Molly Maguire’s Irish Pub and Restaurant in Clark. It is an association of New Jersey business professionals and business owners launched in March 2008, committed to promoting business relationships and personal interaction within the Irish-American business community in New Jersey, based on a shared heritage.
