EAST WINDSOR A Yardley, Pennsylvania, man was still recovering Thursday after he was flown to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton Tuesday afternoon with severe chest and leg injuries he sustained when his car collided with a tractor-trailer on Route 33 near the Turnpike, according to a news release from township police.
Charles Bigley, 61, was listed in fair condition Thursday at Capital Health, spokesman Don MacNeill said.
According to police, Mr. Bigley was driving east on Route 33 just past the Turnpike entrance at about 3 p.m., according to the release. His 1989 Buick drifted into the westbound lane and collided with the rear axle of a 2003 Mack truck driven by Juan Ortiz, 36, of Hamilton, police said.
Firefighters, emergency medical technicians and paramedics had to extricate Mr. Bigley from his car, which had “extensive damage” following the crash, according to police. He was then flown by New Jersey State Police’s NorthSTAR medical helicopter to Capital Health.
Route 33 was closed in both directions for about 45 minutes while emergency responders cleared the accident, the release said. The accident was still under investigation and no charges had been filed as of Wednesday.
East Windsor police responded to the accident at 3:07 p.m. Tuesday, along with ambulances from Capital Health Systems and paramedics from East Windsor Volunteer Rescue Squad No. 2. The East Windsor Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 and Hightstown Engine Company No. 1 also helped out.
