SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Sports News & Notes

   The South Brunswick Soccer Club’s U14 Asteroids took a 4-2 travel win over Ewing last weekend on goals by Mike Wijesinghe, Elijah Suggs, Matt Golden and Sharat Durbhakula. Golden’s score was his third of the season and Suggs has two. Steve Sandoli, Wijesinghe and Dan Spivak lead the defensive effort. John Burke continued his strong play in goal.
   Earlier this year, Burke was outstanding in goal in a 1-0 loss to Wayne. In a 3-2 setback to South Plainfield, the Asteroids trailed 3-0 at halftime but got second-half goals from Golden and Suggs and nearly tied it late in the game. Sandoli, Dan Spivak, Durbhakula and Wijesinghe raised their defensive game in the second half.
   The U-11 Phoenix started with a bang winning three straight games including two on the road. SB beat the Hopewell Valley Wildfire, 2-1, Monroe, 7-1, and the Franklin Township Avengers, 4-1. Goals were scored by Omer Khan, Kryrolos Dawoud, Mekhi “Tyson” Turner, Christos Lolas, Alex Marna, Ben Butler, Dylan Inguardi and Akshith Lingham. Creating the scoring opportunities were Mike Buffolino, Ben Aug, Rohit Kothare, Vishu Gadre, Stavan Nayak and Johnny Wu. Goaltending was handled by Zafar Bhayat.
   SBAA 8U summer travel tryouts will be held Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Rowland Park. If a players birthday falls between May 1, 2002 and April 30, 2003, and they are registered for the SBAA Spring recreation baseball season, and are a resident of South Brunswick Township, the are eligible to tryout.
   It is highly encouraged every player attends both days of tryouts. If a player wants to be considered for selection, every player must be at part of the tryout. Anyone unable to be at any part of the tryout must contact Jim Cooney prior to the start of tryouts.
   Go to wwww.sbaabaseball.com and under the main menu on the left click on SBAA Tournament Baseball and Softball. Once there, click on Baseball Tryout Registration Form and register for tryouts.
   All head coach candidates will be considered after tryouts conclude. Independent evaluators will be at the entire tryout and rate each player on their ability to throw, run, catch, hit and run the bases.
   The travel season begin toward the end of May and concludes at the end of July. The season will be on weekends until school ends. Once school ends expect to have practice or a game every day until the end of July.

   The South Brunswick PAL 8th grade girls’ basketball team finished their season with a 32-3 record, giving it its third 30-plus winning season in five years. Along the way they recorded their 150th career win.
   The Vikings won the championship in five tournaments this year including the IC Winter, Sid Lee Viking Classic, MSR Kelly, Middlesex County and the North Brunswick March Madness.
   In addition, they went undefeated during league play and while being upset in the league Championship final for second place. Members of the team were, Sunna Baig, Erin Carroll, Briana Davis Erica Dwyer, Janae Mayfield, Rachel Calabro, Zojajha Ayub and Zoee D’Costa.
