WEST WINDSOR: Scouts make 1,000 cranes for Japan

WEST WINDSOR — Girl Scouts in West Windsor responded to their concern for the Japanese people affected by the tsunami, earthquakes and nuclear reactor crises by successfully leading an effort to fold 1,000 origami cranes at the Market Fair Mall on March 26 and 27.
The tradition of giving the origami gifts dates back to an ancient legend that promises a wish be granted by a crane to anyone who folds 1,000 paper cranes. In 2001, Girl Scouts in Japan sent thousands of the “Senbazuru” origami cranes to the United States after the Sept. 11 tragedy. Now, almost 10 years later, the Girl Scouts of West Windsor are returning the gesture of friendship and concern.
The local Girl Scouts involved the community by inviting the public to stop by to help fold the cranes or to make a donation. With the help of the public and Girl Scouts from the community and beyond, the group folded and strung 1,000 cranes to send to Japan, and raised more than $250 for the Girl Scouts of Japan relief efforts.
