Celebrate Earth Day with a Recycling Tour

Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders
BRIDGEWATER – The Somerset County Recycling Center, located at 40 Polhemus Lane, will conduct tours of the Recycling Center in celebration of Earth Day and National County Government Month on Thursday, April 14, and Friday, April 15.
Somerset County residents are invited to schedule a 40-minute guided tour between 9:30 and 11 a.m. or 1 and 2 p.m.
During the tour, residents will observe the recycling process as materials and paper are dropped off by curbside trucks and then sorted and processed on conveyer belts. Materials are then baled and loaded onto trailers to be taken for recycling.
An interactive discussion will be held on the merits of "closing the solid waste loop" by recycling, reducing, reusing and backyard composting.
Somerset County handles close to 32,000 tons of recyclables per year from more than 121,000 household curbside pickups. Last year, the county Recycling Center diverted more than 29,000 tons of waste from landfills.
For more information about scheduling an Earth Day tour or to register, contact Recycling Coordinator Melissa Harvey, Somerset County Division of Solid Waste Management, at (908) 231-7109 or [email protected].
Schools wishing to arrange a tour of the Recycling Center or a presentation at their school may contact Melissa Harvey anytime during the year, except for April 14 and 15.
