HAR SINAI DISCUSSION ON PARENTING
IN THE AGE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING APRIL 27
Hopewell Twp. –Parents who feel confused and concerned about their children’s immersion in the Internet and the social networking scene can get some expert opinions on how to deal with the issue at a public panel discussion slated for April 27 from 7-9 p.m. at Har Sinai Temple.
“Parenting in the Age of Social Networking” will feature four panelists who will look at the psychological, social and legal elements of texting, online dating, bullying, gaming and web browsing as it applies to children whose parents may not even know what Twitter and Facebook are.
Open to the public, the discussion will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience. Anyone age 13 and older is invited to attend at the temple’s 2421 Pennington Rd. at Denow Road West location.
"We encourage children 13 and over to come,” explained Marilyn Weinstein, event co-chair with Rose Movitch. "We want them to attend and participate."
The guest speakers include a psychologist, a college student, a member of the Hopewell Township Police Department specializing in cyber crime and a psychiatrist.
Nancy Fine, a member of Har Sinai’s Board of Trustees and a clinical social worker, will introduce the forum and speakers.
Dr. Michael Osit, a psychologist with offices in Warren and Morristown, N.J., will open the discussion by addressing the issues new technology raises among children, families and individuals. The author of "Generation Text: Raising Well-Adjusted Kids In an Age of Instant Everything," has been in practice more than 30 years.
Next, a guest college student, Christina Kopka from the College of New Jersey, will discuss what young people really are using on the Internet and what the potential downside could be for that generation.
A member of the Hopewell Township Police Department will give the third presentation, examining the legal ramifications of Internet and texting abuse.
Rounding out the forum, Princeton psychiatrist Dr. Steve Resnick will speak on Internet addictions to such things as gaming and social networking.
There is no charge to attend the event, which is part of an ongoing series at Har Sinai designed to stimulate discussion and suggest solutions to some of the more prominent issues of the day.
