Winners of the Manville Public Library’s annual Poetry contest were recognized Tuesday night at the library. The winners read their poems and other poems were reading during the event.
Library Director Ed Smith has held this poetry contest for children, receiving about 25 poetry entries.
Winners included Weston students Holly Cornelson, Jade Jimenez, Emma Heywood and Roosevelt student Jose Jimenez.
”Everybody read from Shel Silverstein’s book and we had a little round robin with the children with the oral traditional of poems. It was nice,” Mr. Smith said.
The contest was sponsored by Poetry Magazine so everyone received a copy of the magazine, a T-shirt from the Manville Public library and the winners received a CD from the Academy of American Poets.
Jose Jimenez, a Roosevelt School fifth grader, was a contestant and said he thought, “It was actually great and exciting because we got to write a lot of poems. I thought about a lot of things and chose the one that I was good at.”
His sister, Jade, a third grader at Weston School also participated and wrote her poem about spring.
”I wanted to do the poem because it was fun to write and I thought of spring because that is the season that were are in,” she said.
Some of the poems submitted included:
Baseball
By Holly Cornelson
Hitting lots of home runs,
The game has just begun.
We can’t believe it,
None of us will quit!
Fall
By Connor Hagan
The nice and fresh breeze,
Tall, red and brown trees.
Lots of fun games to play,
In the leaves on the ground that lay.
Summer
By Emma Heywood
Running, jumping, kicking
Splashing in the pool,
Trying to get some shade,
Trying to be cool!
Sky Haiku
By Rebeca Priego
Bird flying in the air
Rain falling down from grey clouds
Moon comes out at night.
Horses
By Yekaterina Saburova
Can you hear that nice soft neigh?
It’s a horse that’s eating hay.
There’s a horse that is drinking water.
She has a little daughter.
Cloud Haiku
By Brandon Salazar
Covering the sun
Changing shape in the big sky
White, soft, fluffy clouds.
