NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – The Head and Neck Oncology Group of Central Jersey at Saint Peter’s University Hospital was feted April 1 as the Medical Honoree by the American Cancer Society at its 25th annual gala at the Palace at Somerset Park.
Saint Peter’s Head and Neck “Clinic’’ has been treating cancer patients since it was established in the late 1960s. Originally located in the Dental Clinic of what was then Middlesex General Hospital, now Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, the clinic was invited to Saint Peter’s in the late 1970s by Sister Marie de Pazzi, where it has remained. Today its team consists of otolaryngologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists with support of oncology nursing specialists, speech and language therapists, a nutritionist and a social worker. Any other support services such as radiographic imaging, laboratory services, physical therapy, or hyperbaric treatments are coordinated through existing hospital services.
“This team approach allows immediate consultation between multi-specialty professionals and provides an in-treatment and follow-up system by which patients are treated and then followed on a regular basis by an entire team,’’ said Diane Hoffman, administrator, Head and Neck Oncology group. “The group is able to meet the objective of treating the whole person, developing a relationship of trust and respect and delivering the most advanced and caring medical attention.’’
