SOUTH BRUNSWICK – News & Notes

   They started as an unknown 4th grade travel team and developed into one of the most successful, talented and competitive basketball travel teams in the state.
   The South Brunswick PAL 8th grade girl’s team recently finished their travel career with an incredible record of 157-25 over the past five years.
   In that span, the Vikings had three 30-plus win seasons with a team-high 38 wins in their 6th-grade year. The Vikings played in 28 tournaments reaching the final 24 times, winning 16 championships and placing second 8 times.
   In league play the Vikings played in every championship game, winning three times and coming in second three times.
   The Vikings team record over the years:4th grade – 32-7 5th grade – 29-56th grade – 38-47th grade – 26-68th grade – 32-3
   The five members who played all five years were, Sunna Baig, Erin Carroll, Briana Davis, Erica Dwyer and Janae Mayfield .
   SBAA is holding 2011 Sophomore Legion and summer tournament travel baseball tryouts on Saturday, May 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Rowland Park for players whose birthdays fall between May 1, 1996 and Apr. 30, 1998. Players must be registered for SBAA spring recreation baseball and be a resident of South Brunswick. SBAA is looking for form a Sophomore Legion team.

   SBAA 8U summer travel tryouts will be held Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Rowland Park.
   If a players birthday falls between May 1, 2002 and April 30, 2003, and they are registered for the SBAA Spring recreation baseball season, and are a resident of South Brunswick Township, the are eligible to tryout.
   It is highly encouraged every player attends both days of tryouts. If a player wants to be considered for selection, every player must be at part of the tryout. Anyone unable to be at any part of the tryout must contact Jim Cooney prior to the start of tryouts.

   All head coach candidates will be considered after tryouts conclude. Independent evaluators will be at the entire tryout and rate each player on their ability to throw, run, catch, hit and run the bases.
   The travel season begins toward the end of May and concludes at the end of July. The season will be on weekends until school ends. Once school ends expect to have practice or a game every day until the end of July.
