Hillsborough High School senior Jerry Liu has been selected as a National Merit scholar.
His probable career field is listed as engineering.
He won the scholarship sponsored by the health care company Bristol-Myers Squibb, which annually awards scholarships to children of full-time employees.
This is the first announcement of National Merit Scholars for this year. On May 4, the corporation will name recipients of $2,500 scholarships. On May 25 and July 11, winners of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be announced.
In total, about 7,800 students will win scholarships worth nearly $35 million.
Jerry is one of about corporate-sponsored 1,000 winners.
