Hillsborough Road, between Route 206 and Willow Road, is closed for several months beginning in late April/early May through October 2011 as part of the Route 206 bypass project.
The state Department of Transportation said a series of traffic pattern changes in the township were necessary because of the construction of the bypass.
Contractor Carbro Inc. is realigning Amwell Road between Steinmetz Road and Clerico Lane. The work will cause single-lane closures with alternating traffic that evening in an effort to erect a new work zone by the next morning. The new traffic pattern consists of one lane on Amwell Road, shifted to the north, in each direction. These changes are expected to remain in place for approximately six months, according to the release.
The release stated that on or about April 26 NJDOT is scheduled to close Hillsborough Road between Route 206 and Willow Road until early October. The Hillsborough Road bridge superstructure over the CSX railroad tracks will be replaced and portions of Hillsborough Road will be reconstructed to accommodate the work.
During the closure, Route 206 travelers headed to Hillsborough Road will take Amwell Road to Willow Road south to their destination. In addition, Hillsborough Road westbound motorists will be directed to Willow Road north to Amwell Road to Route 206, the release said.
Once completed, the bypass will shift through-traffic onto a new 3.6-mile section of Route 206 to the east of the existing highway between Mountain View Road and Old Somerville Road. This will create opportunities for the development of a town center along the current Route 206 in Hillsborough.
”It will not only help the many motorists who commute in and out of town, but is a critical part of our economic development and Town Center Plan,” said Mayor Gloria McCauley.
