Woodfern School students have answered a call for help from a global neighbor once again.
Last year they raised money for the people of Haiti after an earthquake devastated that country. This year students collecting for the victims of the tsunami in Japan.
Student Council members organized two events to react to the recent natural disaster. The first event was called “Cakes for the Quake.” Student Council members asked their peers to bake cupcakes to be sold at the school’s annual Picto Night on April 1. Pupils responded by bringing in more than 900 cupcakes sold that night. Student Council members placed miniature flags they had created into the cupcakes to show support for the Japanese people.
Student Council members then organized “Origami for the Tsunami.” Mrs. xx Bartholomew, Woodfern’s art teacher, enlisted third and fourth graders to make origami birds. Starting at Woodfern’s Art Show on April 12, and continuing throughout the week, students and families were encouraged to donate and select an origami figure, which included a “thank you” from the Woodfern Roadrunners.
More than $500 will be donated to the American Red Cross was collected from the two events.
One parent noted to Pam Pedersen, Woodfern’s Student Council advisor, that she was so happy to see the children working together to make a difference in the lives of other people in the world.
