LAMBERTVILLE — Residents of North Union Street will receive notification this week of a meeting to discuss the road’s reconstruction, Acting Clerk Cynthia Ege said.
The notice will invite residents to attend an informational meeting at 6 p.m. on May 4 at the Justice Center, 25 S. Union St.
The reconstruction, including drainage improvements, will span from Buttonwood Street to South Arnett Avenue. This is Phase 2 of the North Union Street upgrade. The useful life of the upgrade is expected to be at least 10 years.
Phase 1 spanned from Delaware Avenue to Buttonwood Street.
The city last month approved a bond ordinance in the amount of $400,000, allowing the project to move forward. The ordinance was first introduced on Feb. 22, receiving final approval March 21. About $175,000 comes from a grant awarded to the city by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
The project is one of just eight in Hunterdon County that were approved last month under the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s Fiscal Year 2012 Transportation Capital Program. The eight projects total nearly $10.5 million.
The program represents the first year of a five-year Transportation Capital Plan that Gov. Chris Christie announced in January to put New Jersey on the path toward fiscal health by prioritizing projects, decreasing borrowing and increasing pay-as-you-go cash funding, according to the DOT.
”New Jersey’s transportation system helps drive our economy,” Gov. Christie said. “The projects being funded in the FY 12 capital program reflect our focus on maintaining road, bridge and transit assets in a state of good repair and will benefit residents in every county throughout the state.”
The DOT awarded a similar grant to Lambertville in 2009 for the Phase 1 portion of North Union Street in the amount of $165,000.
North Union is considered a fundamental link in Lambertville, uniting residential and commercial districts.
In addition to the North Union Street improvement project, the Hunterdon County projects include $3 million toward the replacement of the Rosemont-Raven Rock Road Bridge over Lockatong Creek in Delaware Township.
