FTHS forensics coach wins national award

The Freehold Regional High School District has announced that Philip Drummond, coach of the forensics team at Freehold Township High School, has been given the diamond coach award for excellence by the National Forensic League (NFL).

Four Freehold Township students will travel to the 2011 NFL National Speech and Debate Tournament in Dallas, June 13-18. The event is one of the world’s largest academic contests.

Senior Peter Conforti will represent New Jersey in Humorous Interpretation.

Jeremy Eisner and Steven Perlamuter, a senior and a junior, respectively, have qualified in Duo Interpretation.

Senior Mia O’Brien will compete in Congressional Debate.

They will join more than 3,200 participants from across the country and as far away as China. Top performers will take home more than $200,000 in college scholarships. National competition occurs in the following 10 main events:

Policy Debate, Public Forum Debate, Lincoln Douglas Debate, Congressional Debate, Original Oratory, United States Extemporaneous Speaking, International Extemporaneous Speaking, and Humorous, Dramatic, and Duo Interpretation, as well as seven consolation and supplemental events.

Diamond awards recognize excellence from member coaches over time. The NFL provides diamond awards based on the results of students coached and the number of students during a career. Each diamond represents more than 2,000 speech performances or debates over five or more years, according to a press release.
