MANVILLE: Wal-Mart aids in fundraising for Aelx’s Lemonade Stand

By Mary Ellen Zangara, Staff Writer
Manville Wal-Mart has helped the community many times through donations given to local groups and organizations and they continued to help with a national cause Alex’s Lemonade Stand. The store employees held an Alex’s Lemonade Stand on April 16 despite the cold, windy and rainy weather. Employees braved the weather until the rains came and even the Easter Bunny stopped by before moving the outdoor stand inside.
Store manager John Roth said he was pleased to participate in this cause.
”We are raising money for Alex’s Lemonade stand and the whole goal was our region here — the Metro Philadelphia New Jersey region — wants to make up the difference that Alex wasn’t able to raise the last year before she passed. Her goal was a $1 million and this region is committed to making up the $300,000 this week that she wasn’t able to make up before cancer claimed her life. All the Wal-Marts in the Metro Philadelphia New Jersey area for sure are participating in this concerted effort.”
Besides the lemonade, other items sold included hot dogs, hamburgers, lemon candy, and Tastykake Alex’s Lemon Krimpets. The stand also accepted donations.
About 90 stores in total participated with a $1,500 per-store goal and to date the amount is $70,833. The Manville Wal-Mart surpassed its goal.
Alex’s Lemonade website explains that “Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) shares the vision of our founder and creator, Alexandra “Alex” Scott — a cure for all children with cancer. When Alex, who was diagnosed with childhood cancer just before her first birthday, was 4, she told her parents she wanted to set up a front-yard lemonade stand. Her plan: to give the money to doctors to help them find a cure. Her first Alex’s Lemonade Stand raised an astonishing $2,000 in one day. “In 2004, when Alex passed away at the age of 8, her stand and inspiration had raised over $1 million towards finding a cure for the disease that took her life.
