North and South Brunswick track and field athletes will be competing in this week’s 117th running of the Penn Relays Carnival.
The meet, the nation’s largest track and field meet, will run today through Saturday at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Leading the area entrants are North Brunswick’s boys’ distance medley relay team. The foursome of Kyle Davis, Chris Pagan, David Grau and Cullen Davis qualified for Penn back on March 1 when they posted a 10:19.08 in finishing third at the Eastern States Championships held at the New Balance Track and Field Armory in New York City.
The Raiders are racing Friday in the boys High School Championship of America DMR.
Among the teams the Raiders will be competing against are state powers Christian Brothers Academy, West Windsor Plainsboro-North, Ridgewood, Livingston, Red Bank Catholic and Haddonfield.
Raider relay teams will also compete in the boys and girls Large Schools 4×100 and 4×400.
South Brunswick’s Mariah Browne and Cayla Del Piano will be competing individually for the girls, while for the boys, it’s Dominick Padovano. Browne is competing in today’s girls long jump. She has a personal best of 19-5¼. During the winter season, she jumped 18-7¼ in taking second at the Eastern States meet.
The versatile Browne won the 55- meter dash this winter at the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV championships.
Del Piano will be running today in the girls high school mile. During the indoor season she lowered her personal best in the 1,600 to 5:01.59. She won the 1,600 at the Central Jersey Group IV championships undercover and was fourth at the Meet of Champions.
Padovano will be throwing the discus tomorrow. He heads into Penn feeling good, having just thrown a personal best 171-9 at the Colts Neck Relays on April 16.
During the indoor campaign, Padovano recorded a personal best 55- 10. Although the event is not his best, he still took second at the Eastern States and was sixth at the Meet of Champions.
South Brunswick relay teams that will be in action are the boys and girls 4×100 and 4×400.
