Trees are used for air, paper, log houses, pencils and buildings, according to first and second grade pupils at Littlebrook Elementary School. These were the uses given by the children when asked how trees are used at the beginning of a tree presentation on Friday morning in honor of Arbor Day.
Greg O’Neil, the municipal arborist, talked about the how the public works department keeps all the trees in the township healthy.
But the highlights of the day were learning about the equipment and seeing a tree care technician go up and down in the municipal bucket truck and watching a tree limb go through the wood chipper.
”You put it into the truck and shred it into hundreds of pieces and then I don’t know what happens,” said Andrew Stournaras, a first grader, when Mr. O’Neil asked if the children knew what happened to all the tree trimmings.
They then learned all the chips were called mulch and they were used around trees and flowers in the township.
The second graders were also given Norway spruce seedlings to take home and plant.
A new tree was planted by the Princeton Shade Tree Commission at Littlebrook Elementary School in honor of Arbor Day on Friday and a proclamation for Arbor Day was read by Sue Nemeth, council president.
