Richard Onderko, Manville
Inspired by an article in last year’s Manville News honoring former Republican Mayor George Papawick and his views on civic duty in the 1960s, I have recently formed four academic scholarships for the graduating senior class of 2011 and 2012. An award of $1,000 to both the top girl and boy and a secondary award of $500 to each runner up will be awarded.
Times sure have changed but George Papawick’s views and what he stood for still resonate with some of us. His primary focus was on making Manville a better place to live. As councilman, I volunteered to serve all taxpayers of Manville with no monetary gain in mind. I believe giving back to those who can use it more is a very rewarding experience.
My hope is that this award helps stimulate academic competition this year and next. Speaking from experience, I believe a good education and competing for high marks makes one very successful later in life and allows one to achieve and live out the American Dream.
So to all the Manville High students out there, compete academically! You can earn a nice reward for all your hard work!
