Concert to aid Japanese churches

On Sunday, May 15, at 4:30 p.m., the Spirit of Orthodoxy Choir will present a concert to benefit the Japanese Orthodox Church, many of whose parishes were heavily damaged in the recent tsunami, at Saints Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, 605 Washington Ave., Manville.
Entitled “Hymns of Pascha (Easter), the Feast of Feasts: Celebrating Christ’s Resurrection in Song,” the concert will feature great works of Orthodox music, primarily in English. Directed by Aleksei Shipovalnikov, the choir sings a capella in the Orthodox tradition.
No admission will be charged, but there will be a free will offering and all of it will be sent to Japan through International Orthodox Christian Charities.
Hundreds of thousands of people were left homeless following the 9.0-rated earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck Japan on March 11.
A reception will follow the concert in the Parish Hall with foods from many Orthodox cultures and countries, and an opportunity to meet the choir members.
