HILLSBOROUGH: YMCA to join effort to set world record

It will be one site trying to give ‘World’s Largest Swimming Lesson’ on June 14

On Tuesday, June 14, the Hillsborough YMCA will be part of an attempt to set a global record for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson. The three branches of the Somerset Valley YMCA (that includes Bridgewater and Somerville) are locations for the free event at 11 a.m.
In 2010, the inaugural event established the Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson. Almost 4,000 participants across 34 states, five countries and three continents participated to publicize the importance of teaching children to swim.
Tragically, drowning is the second leading cause of unintended, injury-related death of children ages one to 14 in the U.S. More than one in four fatal drowning victims is children 14 and younger. In 2010, aquatic facilities from Disney World to California, the Bronx, Mexico, Dubai and the South Korea all taught the same tips at the same time to send the message that “Swimming Lessons Save Lives.”To find out how to join the event, contact Hillsborough’s Aquatic Director Arthur Soybel at [email protected].
