PMUA reports 800 residents sign up for collection service

PLUMSTED — The Plumsted Municipal Utilities Authority (PMUA) is reporting that nearly 800 residents have signed up so far for discounted trash, recycling and bulky waste service.

Based on the positive response, the PMUA plans to begin offering collection service to Plumsted residents beginning July 1, according to a press release.

The new township service will include:

Curbside collection of household trash once per week.

Single-stream curbside collection of recyclable materials every other week — no need to separate recyclables at home.

Curbside collection of certain residential bulky waste items once per month.

Two new 95-gallon containers — one for household waste and one for recyclable materials — are provided at no charge.

All of these services will be provided for a quarterly charge of $74 that is inclusive of all current fees and fixed for three years — an average savings of 22 percent over prior individual collection service rates, which do not include bulky waste collection, according to the PMUA.

Collection service will be provided by Waste Management of New Jersey under contract with the PMUA. Waste Management was the low bidder for these services under a Request for Proposals that was issued by the PMUA in 2010.

“We are delighted with the strong response from Plumsted residents,” PMUA Chairman Mike McCue said. “By using the township’s combined purchasing power, we have been able to lower rates for our residents and lock in those savings for the next three years – while improving the waste and recycling collection services they receive.”

The PMUA will be sending residents further information regarding collection days and times in May. Residents can still sign up for the new service by obtaining and completing a sign-up form that is available at the municipal building, 121 Evergreen Road, New Egypt, or on the PMUA website at www.pmua.net.

Residents can also sign up for the collection service during New Egypt Day on May 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Further information can be obtained by calling Peter Ylvisaker at the PMUA, 609-758-7539, ext. 132.
