EWING — Both the West Windsor-Plainsboro High North and WW-P South softball teams came up just short in their quests to reach the Mercer County Tournament championship game.
Playing on nearby fields on Tuesday night at Armstrong Park in Ewing, the Knights dropped a 6-3 decision to Allentown, while the Pirates fell in 10 innings to Robbinsville, 1-0.
WW-P North led Allentown, 3-1, when the Redbirds exploded for five runs in the third inning. Erin Drennan’s grand slam home run was the big hit for Allentown. Kaitlyn Nelson, Sarah Bush and Taylor Phelan each drove in runs for the Knights.
”We battled them hard,” North coach Jason Petrone said. “They have some heavy hitters over there. We were hoping to get back to the championship game again this year but it wasn’t in the cards. We came out hitting a little bit.”
WW-P South was locked in a scoreless battle with Robbinsville that went into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, with the international tier-breaker in affect, the Ravens were able to score a run to pull out the win.
Liz Mendez tossed nine shutout innings before the Ravens broke through in the 10th.
We should have hit better,” South coach Nicole Arias said. “But you have to give (Lauren) Fischer credit. And (Rebecca) Freeman too. They’re a great battery. They had us off balance all night.”
