The Mercer County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is pleased to announce the kick-off of their annual educational fundraising luncheon event entitled, Handbags, Hats, and Hope, to be held on Sunday, May 15th, 2011 from 1 pm- 4 pm at Jasna Polana in Princeton, New Jersey.
The Handbags, Hats, and Hope annual fundraising event will be hosted by celebrity comedian, Derrick Fox former host of the Apollo Theatre Comedy Hour and will feature Handbag Bingo, a high end fashion hat show, special prizes, and a fine dining for all attendees.
This year’s event honors local youth educational program, Young Scholars’ Institute as the beneficiary of the fundraiser. Young Scholars’ Institute, a non-profit year-round learning center for Trenton area children in grades K-12, was established in 1990 by executive director, Jerri L. Morrison, a former educator.
Young Scholars’ Institute provides innovative educational programs to approximately 1,200 school children annually within the Trenton community. These programs and services include one-to-one tutoring, SAT preparatory courses, enrichment classes, college tours and college admissions workshops, and literacy workshops.
In addition, to raising funds for Young Scholars’ Institute, Jack and Jill of America, Mercer County Chapter will collect and donate over 500 books to a youth reading room at Young Scholars’ and to the Mercer/Middlesex Counties Juvenile Detention Center literacy programs.
Through the book donation to Mercer/Middlesex Counties Juvenile literacy program, we are tapping into one of our organization’s national thrusts, which is to assist in dismantling the Cradle to Prison Pipeline. It is our hope that by helping to keep these children reading, we are spurring their imaginations, broadening their horizons, increasing their vocabularies and generally helping to rehabilitate them into people who, upon their release, will give to society productively instead.
