Twin “W” First Aid Squad to Celebrate Emergency Medical Services Week
The West Windsor Township Council and Mayor, Shing-Fu Hsueh has proclaimed the week of May 15, 2011 to May 21, 2011 to be the Emergency Medical Services Week. To help celebrate the recognition of this week, the Twin “W” First Aid Squad will be holding an open house to familiarize our community with the emergency medical services we provide as volunteers. Emergency Medical Technician squad members will be offering blood pressure screenings, a tour of our building, ambulances, and refreshments. The open house will be on Wednesday, May 18th with a barbeque from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. It will take place at the squad headquarters, located at 21 Everett Drive behind the police station and courthouse. All West Windsor residents are invited to come meet the volunteers who serve at no cost to our residents.
On May 18th, the squad members will be visiting local school to provide local children a tour of the ambulances and get the children familiar with EMTs.
Twin “W” First Aid Squad has been serving our community for over 37 years and is an all volunteer, non-billing agency serving West Windsor Township and surrounding communities, with over 20 active Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) who respond during the hours of 7pm to 7am, 7 days a week to nighttime 911 calls. The squad volunteers consist of residents of West Windsor, individuals from neighboring towns, and students of local colleges and high schools.
Last year, Twin “W” volunteers responded to over 600 calls within West Windsor and surrounding communities, transporting over 400 individuals to local hospitals such as University Medical Center at Princeton, Capital Health System’s Regional Medical Center, Robert Wood Johnson Hamilton, Capital Health System’s Mercer Medical Center, and Saint Francis Medical Center. Over the past several years, these dedicated individuals were called upon by the State of New Jersey and New York to provide necessary resources during times of disaster including snow emergencies and flooding situations. Twin “W” has never billed any individual for medical supplies used or services rendered. The Twin “W” First Aid Squad should not be confused with West Windsor Fire & Emergency Services who does bill for these services.
Serving as a volunteer EMT is a large commitment. Members spend one night a week at the squad building to make sure that an ambulance is always ready and staffed. Some members even respond from home to secondary calls. Many of these dedicated volunteers are motivated by a desire to help the people around them, whether it is for something as minor as a case of the flu or for something more serious such as a heart attack, individuals involved in motor vehicle accidents, or fire department standbys to ensure our local volunteer firefighters have the immediate care necessary if they should sustain an injury. Men and women volunteer so that they can be of help to people around them. In addition, the students gain valuable experiences, which lead some of them to pursue careers in the medical field.
Having EMTs attend to these emergencies allows our community to stay safe. The Twin “W” First Aid Squad hopes you will consider sharing your time and be a volunteer for a great cause.
