HILLSBOROUGH: Students achieve on college campuses

   Irene Ann Beam of Hillsborough graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in communication sciences and disorders from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va., on May 7.
   Participating in the honors program, Irene Ann researched and developed an educational module on traumatic brain injury, which she presented at the Speech and Hearing Association of Virginia Conference this spring. Irene Ann also received the Robin C. McKay Memorial Scholarship, awarded to one CSD senior each year.
   On May 6, Irene Ann received the CSD Department’s 2011 Sara Elizabeth Runyan Service Award. Irene Ann co-chaired the university’s Relay for Life, which raised more than $230,000 for cancer research this year. JMU’s Relay for Life was the highest per-capita university Relay fundraiser in the nation.
   Irene Ann also has walked in several Susan G. Komen three-day Walks for the Cure, raising more than $18,500 in donations from sponsors. Irene Ann walks in memory of her mother, the late Mary Ellen Beam, who was an instructional assistant in Hillsborough for many years.
   Irene Ann has received an assistantship to continue studies at JMU this fall, pursuing an advanced degree in speech-language pathology.

   Julia Bergen of Hillsborough was recently welcomed into the Gamma chapter of the Sigma Alpha sorority at Michigan State University. The sorority promotes women in all facets of agriculture.
   She is the daughter of Kathy and Paul Bergen and is a sophomore majoring in animal science.

   Stephanie Silleck, a sophomore majoring in biology at The College of New Jersey, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester. She is a 2009 graduate of Hillsborough High School.
