”A Passage to Asia”, a celebration of Asian culture, will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at Montgomery High School on Route 601, Skillman. A portion of proceeds will go to aid earthquake and tsunami victims in Japan.
The day is sponsored by Montgomery High School students of the Asian Heritage Club and the Chinese language program. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear traditional Asian attire.
From 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center, traditional performances of Chinese, Indian, Korean and Burmese dances and music will be highlighted.
The sounds of the er-hu Chinese two-string instrument) and gu-zheng, a 16- to 29-string instrument, will be presented, as will a young Chinese yo-yo competitor.
Attendees may dine on Asian cuisine and join in such activities as calligraphy, painting and games. The food will be donated by students, parents and local Asian restaurants supporting this event.
Asian souvenirs and merchandise will be for sale, and a portion of each sale will be donated to victims in Japan. Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish of their favorite food to share and to take advantage of an admission discount.
Admission is $8 in advance, but $5 in advance if you bring a dish to share (families are suggested to bring a larger amount), and $10 at the door. Children three and younger are free.
