The Princeton Township Police Department and the Princeton Borough PoliceDepartment, in conjunction with the Princeton Dept. of Human Services, conducted a Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 14, at John Witherspoon Middle School on Walnut Lane.
The bike rodeo was designed to provide young cyclists with a minimum set of skills for on-road riding and safety.
It featured bike safety inspections (conducted byJay’s Cycles staff and Hart’s Cyclery staff), a safety lecture (by the police departments) and a road course set up in the parking lot.
The Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad as well as the Princeton Fire Department attended the event and allowed interested individuals to look at, and in some cases try out, some of the tools of their job.
Several community organizations, including the Princeton Recreation Department, the Princeton Freewheelers, University Medical Center in Princeton, Sustainable Princeton and The Greater Mercer TMA, also attended the event and provided safety information as well as information about their organizations.
Township police registered more than 20 bicycles for their in-house bicycle registration program.
Participants Evan DeVitoand Anna Eaton won new bicycles and Emily Morgan, Luke Jackson, Cole Blochand the Oscar family won gift certificates to Jay’s Cycles and Kopp’s Cycle.
Approximately 50 children from the Princeton community registered and participated in the rodeo.
Due to the success of this year’s Bike Rodeo, the organization committee is exploring the possibility of making it an annual event.
