SOUTH BRUNSWICK – SBHS golf leader helps team

By Maria Riegel, Special Writer
Senior and South Brunswick High School varsity boys golf co-captain, Spencer Alexander is a great leader to the inexperienced team and has contributed to the majority of the team’s success according to head varsity coach Mark Kraft.
”Spencer is a great kid and has developed into an outstanding golfer,” Mr. Kraft said.
Mr. Alexander began playing golf with his father when he was 12 years old so he could bond with his dad, but after playing for a while, he enjoyed the sport even more.
When Mr. Alexander was 13 years old, he won the U.S. Golf Association Tournament which he considers his biggest golf accomplishment because he doubted himself and then realized his abilities.
Mr. Alexander started his golf career at SBHS by playing on the varsity team in his freshman year .
”I think that golf is very competitive sport and it takes a lot of mental strength, not just physical strength like most sports,” Mr. Alexander said.
According to Mr. Kraft, Mr. Alexander holds the position of the lead-off hitter which is the number one position on the team.
”He has to play against the best players from all the teams in that position,” Mr. Kraft said. “He never has an easy match as number one and he has done a great job.”
Mr. Alexander has seen himself improve in his mental concentration in the game as well having a stronger and more powerful swing.
Although, Mr. Alexander feels he has improved, he would still like to get better at his short game through putting the ball better and become even more focused mentally than what he already is.
He also would like to take the games he plays more seriously. In addition to these goals, Mr. Alexander would also like to spend more time with the underclassmen and help them more with mistakes they make.
Mr. Alexander was recently chosen as an All Red Division All Star Player, which qualifies him to be one of the top ten golf players in Middlesex County.
Also, the varsity golf team was just awarded the Red Division Sportsmanship Award due to Mr. Alexander’s great display of sportsmanship according to Mr. Kraft.
”He always shows great sportsmanship to opposing teams and is always the first player to shake hands with the opponents,” Mr. Kraft said.
In the fall, Mr. Alexander will be attending Middlesex County College where he will be majoring in business and hopes to play golf for them as well.
Before Mr. Alexander’s golf career for the high school concludes he would still like to win the GMC Championship approaching at the end of May.
Although he will miss playing with the underclassmen on the South Brunswick team, he also knows that he can still play golf with his dad on the weekends after he graduates.
”I think a lot of people should play golf because it teaches you good values and honesty,” Mr. Alexander said.
