NEW JERSEY TREE FOUNDATION AWARDED $4,195 BY RUTGERS LANDSCAPE & NURSERY AS PART OF ITS STEWARD OF THE EARTH PROGRAM

BY Kris Santiago
Ringoes, NJ—May 23, 2011— Rutgers Landscape & Nursery donated $4,195 to the New Jersey Tree Foundation as part of its “Steward of the Earthprogram.  The NJ Tree Foundation is a state-wide non-profit organization dedicated to planting trees in New Jersey’s most underserved neighborhoods.  Its successful programs include the community-based Newark Renaissance Trees Program (NRTP), the Urban Airshed Reforestation Program (UARP) in Camden, Green Streets, Celebrate Arbor Day, and the 9/11/2001 memorial – the Grove of Remembrance.
Lisa Simms, Director of the New Jersey Tree Foundation said, “The Rutgers Landscape & Nursery funds were used to plant trees along Goldsmith Avenue in the City of Newark. Deborah and Lewis Coy applied for the trees. Lewis Coy said, "I had the only tree on the block. Our street was horribly hot during the summer, and looked so barren. I felt it was time to show love to all in my neighbors with greenery. (These trees) will bring our families together." On April 23rd, over 40 neighborhood residents braved the pouring rain to plant 16 large shade trees in the median of Goldsmith Ave.
Residents purchased flower planters for the two block area of Goldsmith, and shrubs were donated to help complete the community greening efforts. Residents planted a variety of flowers (annuals & bulbs) in the planters, and purchased solar lights to illuminate their gorgeous median. Thanks to the support of Rutgers Landscape & Nursery, two blocks in Newark are clean, green and will be awash in color this summer.”
Rutgers Nursery’s Steward of the Earth program consists of a number of initiatives that aim to bring awareness of environmental issues and funding for green projects throughout our community. Initiatives include beautification projects, customer participation events, garden competitions, sustainability projects, as well as fund raising and donations.
