EAST WINDSOR – A brawl disturbed the peace at VFW Post 5700 near midnight Sunday.
Patrol officers Glen Vega and Lee Platt sustained minor injuries at the scene.
“They’re doing good. They had some bumps and bruises,” said Lieutenant Richard Bernstein of the East Windsor Police Department during a phone interview late Tuesday afternoon.
Police were injured when Abel Martin, 19, of East Windsor, resisted arrest, an East Windsor Police Department press release stated.
Mr. Martin sustained minor injuries while he resisted arrest, the release said.
Both officers responded to the late-night report of a large fight taking place at the VFW.
Additionally, there was an unconfirmed report of a gun being involved, police said.
Around 11:15 p.m., the officers arrived at VFW Post 5700, located on Dutch Neck Road.
Upon police arrival, the crowd began to disperse, police said, while Mr. Martin did not.
Instead, Mr. Martin “refused to disperse and approached the officers in a fighting posture,” the release said.
Both the police officers and Mr. Martin were taken straight from the VFW to Princeton Medical Center, were they were treated and released.
As Mr. Martin was taken to the hospital and was not arrested at the scene, charges for aggravated assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct are still pending, Lt. Bernstein said.
Lt. Bernstein expects the charges to be filed within the next few days.
