LAWRENCE: Stella Drive to become one-way

By Lea Kahn
Motorists who have used Stella Drive — an alley that connects Gainsboro Road and Gedney Road — as a shortcut to avoid the traffic light at Gainsboro Road and Lawrence Road will have to look for an alternative when it becomes a one-way street.
Municipal Manager Richard Krawczun said motorists who drive west on Gainsboro Road frequently turn left onto Stella Drive to reach Gedney Road. There is no traffic light at the intersection of Gedney Road and Lawrence Road.
But Stella Drive will become a one-way street northbound, under an ordinance approved by Township Council at its May 17 meeting.
”Residents complained that cars were speeding on Stella Drive to beat the traffic light at Gainsboro Road,” Mr. Krawczun said. “The township tried speed humps to calm traffic (on Stella Drive), but that didn’t work.”
Stella Drive is a narrow, one-lane street. Residents who live on Lawrence Road between Gainsboro Road and Gedney Road use Stella Drive to reach their garages or parking spaces. But if cars are speeding along Stella Drive, there is the potential for an accident, Mr. Krawczun said.
Some of the residents complained to the Lawrence Township Police Department and municipal officials about speeding cars on Stella Drive. The ordinance is intended to resolve the issue and correct the situation, he said.
