MANVILLE: Seniors get lesson from high schoolers

By Mary Ellen Zangara, Special Writer
Senior Citizens at the Manville Senior Center were treated last week to a science lesson from Manville High School students on how to make goop. The students came to the center at Fire House No. 1 and spent time instructing the seniors. They also made a family tree craft during their visit.
The students were all girls and members of the National Honor Society. President Jessica Anderson was joined by Jess Lubas, Natalie Lewicki, Alyssa Silcox, Becca Giannotto, Ahn Le, Jen Wanjohi, Emily Sellar, Devon Lawrence and Vanessa Velez. They were chosen to participate by who did the most and who was reliable and dependable in the NHS.
”The National Honor Society came to the Senior Citizen Center and we came by to do some crafts and experiments with them. We made a goop out of corn starch and water,” said Jessica Anderson. “We were invited by the senior center and I was told by my adviser to bring some ideas and crafts. It is good to get involved with a different part of the community. We have dealt with the seniors in the fall when we rake leaves with them. It is nice to see some familiar faces again to do an outreach,”
Senior Citizen Ann Montefusco thought it was fun. “It was interesting and very nice. The girls had a nice sense of humor and were very easy with us.” Ms. Montefusco joked with the girls, asking them if there was a recipe the seniors could take home.
Center manager Lisa Carra said that she wanted to bring in the high school students. “
It is Older American’s Month this month and I thought it would be a great chance to interact with the seniors. A science project would stimulate the seniors and the students all at the same time. It was a great opportunity,” she said.
