This summer, the Hunterdon County YMCA’s South Camp will be held at South Hunterdon Regional High School.
The Y’s South Camp will benefit from South Hunterdon High School’s newly renovated space; the camp is able to utilize classrooms, the gymnasium, and beautiful outdoor environment surrounding the high school.
Activities at YMCA South Camp include sports, games, crafts, team building and nature. Special activities include theme days, sports tournaments, field trips and swimming at Nockamixon State Park in Pennsylvania. South Camp is for children 5 to 12.
The camp sessions are one-week each, beginning June 27 and run through Aug. 19. Camp hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m., with optional extended hours. AM extended care begins at 7:15 a.m. and PM extended care runs through 6 p.m.
YMCA South Campers gain new experiences, develop essential social skills and create lifelong friendships, while enjoying camp adventures along the way.
”When at Y South Camp, children are given new responsibilities and they learn independence. As a result, they become more confident, open to trying new things and grow as individuals and as part of a group,” said Senior Program Director Kristin Heimall.
As a nonprofit “committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y works to help children and teens discover their full potential by providing opportunities to learn, grow and thrive amidst caring, supportive adults,” said a spokesman.
According to camping experts, there are five reasons why children and teens should experience summer camp:
— For adventure: Summer camp is all about fun adventures in the outdoors. YMCA camps have a new adventure for every child and teen.
— For new experiences: Y Camps are about learning outside of school, exploring and appreciating the outdoors, developing new skills, making friends and showing leadership.
— For personal growth: While being away from the routine back home, youth have a chance to develop confidence and independence by taking on new responsibilities and challenges.
— For new friendships: Amidst the fun of camp games, songs, swimming, and talent shows, campers meet new friends.
— For memories: Summer camp is an unforgettable experience that will give each camper memories that will last a lifetime.
Y South Camp provides exciting and educational camp programming for children and teens, and their parents.
To ensure that every child and teen has the chance to go to camp, the Hunterdon County YMCA offers financial assistance to those in need.
